Elsa, age six years, lives with her older brothers and sisters and her mother  high on the mountain side in San Antonio Polopo. Unfortunately Elsa’s father passed away when she was very young. Her family lives in a house made from bamboo and mud that is in danger of collapsing.  But now thanks to our readers who donated to the Chemainus Guatemala Rotary Team Elsa is building a new house.

Her new house will be made of 5 layers of concrete blocks then wood and metal roof.  If you were here last night you might have seen young men carrying as many as seven concrete construction blocks on their backs from lake level up hundreds of feet on difficult terrain to the building site.

The new construction is well along under direction of our contractor Julian. Butch, Ken and two other workers will complete the house in five days. But that will have to wait for another blog.

Besides the building blocks, bags of cement, gravel, wood and metal roofing will all be carried up the hillside by hand.  Is Elsa excited or what?   Just ask me!

Incredible. How people with less than what we are accustomed to, we are frivolous and they are just scraping by. Seeing her smile makes me humble and realize the things in life we take for granted should be cherished. Good job rotations for shedding some much needed lite and kindness.
